Hi Stid!
Are you sure you installed the Windows that came with your computer on it? Because it seems you have installed another copy of XP.

Default XP Key

Hi stid,

What may have happened is that the board that came with the pc was "bios locked" which means that a string is added to the BIOS by the manufacturer that allows the recovery cd to work without having to re-activate XP. I assume that you changed the motherboard on the pc, MS consider changing a motherboard a new pc (real pain). You may need to call the original manufacturer to get a key or reinstall windows with an original key.
All the best:computer2

I didn't know that it works like that. I've got also a recovery cd, and I was always wondering why I don't have to fill in the product key. I guess you're totally right!

Waht exactly do you meanm by " new key " ? IF you call them and tell them that you had to change the mother board but everythingelse is the same they WILL give you a new installation id to activate your product. Select activate option pick telephone and give them the installation id they will give you a new installation ID. Ask for a manager or supervisor if they dont and insist. Dont let them get you. ( i wonder if indian MS have managers ??? ) You definetely do not need to buy a new copy if your current copy is legally yours and if you are installing it on the same PC.

Regards.
