Default powerfull machine / slow performance - time to re-install?

hi, recently i have upgraded my pc to a:
Pentium 4 630+, 3.00ghz.
2gb of ddr-sd ram. pc3200 200mhz.
Motherboard Asus - p5vd1x.
ATI Radeon 9600 pro delux 256mb graffics card.
(C) Drive: Seagate 80gb hard drive (OS - Windows xp Pro SP2)
(D) Drive: seagate 200gb hard drive

The Guy in the shop who put the pc together managed to save all the data on my (D) Drive and also all the aplications/programs and files on the (C) Drive on witch my operating systems lies.

So in theory everything that was on my old pc sould now work fine on my newer/faster pc.

well the thing is... its not. infact it seems to run much slower than my old pc. i noticed before i upgraded to the new pc though that the old one was getting a bit slugish but did'nt do anything about it at the time.

since up grading, ive tried a few things to get the computer running faster. 1. ive run spybot and adaware for spyware
2. ive defraged both hard drives
3. ive run mcafee virus scan. (no virusis found)
4. run memtest to check memeroy (no errors found)
5. gone into msconfig and unchecked some start up programs

so now i'm not quite sure what thew problem is. i have a 80gb hard drive with my OS on it and i have quite alot of programs and games installed. but the hard drive is still half empty.

the only reasons i can think of are:

1. i have a virus, that has not been detected
2. i have to many programs installed
3. wrong hardware set up configuration
4. some kind of problem when installing old OS on new Motherboard and CPU.

the least possible reason out of the above 4 is (wrong hardware Configuration) as i have used the guy who built the pc a few time before and he seems to know his stuff.

so basically i'm right now i'm pondering on formating and re-installing windows xp. i really dont want to do it so i thought i'll give this forum a go before i wipe everything and start over.

anyway this is my first post in this forum, if anyone has any ideas please be in contact it will be much appreciated.

Hi there Thief33 , welcome to PCHF.

It sounds like he has just put the HD in the new pc and did a repair install. Now that might be enough to get it to work but after such mayor hardware changes you really have to re-install windows fresh.

Great response Joe and exactly what I was thinking.

It's painful BUT you really must consider backing up everything and then installing it all fresh again theif.
