Default .avi problem

My computer has suddenly stopped playing .avi files, i have got media player, real player and win amp none of these play .avi files anymore, they still play others such as mpeg,, etc... when i select a .avi clip the player loads it up, and just doesn't play, it says its playing, but no picture is being shown also the timer does't count. anyone with any ideas will be greatly appreciated. thanks.
