Default [Resolved] Reformatted hard drive need help

As the title says I did my anual re-format of my hard drive and everythings fine except one thing. My internet is INSANELY slow. Before I got a good 350+KBps now I get no better than 10. Ive installed all my drivers and they are all current. I havent installed service pack 2 yet as it says itll take two hours to complete a 75MB file. Hell I used to be able to knock that out in at least 10 minutes. What could be causing this? I dont have any anti virus installed yet or anti spyware programs but Ill get to that asap but I need my internet back to what it used to be. At these speeds I would have my isp pay me! But since they provide me with 3Mbps down for 90 a month (cable tv included .) I cant argue.

Its kinda funny. the reason I reformatted in the first place (besides the fact I had 80 gigs of pure **** strewn in the darkest corners of my hard drive) is because my internet seemed slow, and it was slow, about 130KBps but thats laughable now that Im cruizin at 10.
Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for the reply joey. Im using a Dell 8200 with 1280MB of RDRAM 2.4 Ghz Pentum 4 processor NvidiaFX 5200 graphics card Running Windows XP service pack 1, Ive updated all the security updates from microsoft.com except service pack 2 as that would take way to long. Im using Charter communications 3Mbps cable internet service, which is normally great, and Im not networked with anyone else at my house.

2Wire clocked me at 105.70 Kbps! This is about what Ive been getting from most speed tests like cnet. But my real pain is felt while downloading sizable data, like for instance the most recent nvidia drivers will take me 30 minutes to download 23.8 Mega Bytes. Ping tests are horrible too, my lowest was 217 and my highest reachable ping (below 2000) was 1130.

I should also point out that my problems began earlyer today before I reformatted and was getting pings no lower than 250 while playing battlefield 2. The battlefield is my life... so I must reformat! Now Im in s-it up to my eyeballs. and going through battlefield withdrawls. Im beginning to wonder if the problem resides with my isp since my upload speeds are normal (in the high 200's) while my download speed is usually less than half my upload speed, odd.

Im also having compatability issues, Battlefield 2 will no longer start! sometimes I hear the cd spin fruitlessly in my drive trying to its little hearts content to get going but to no avail. Sometimes the loading screen comes up but freezez. Do you think I should try to download service pack 2 overnight to see if it corrects some of this? I know how confusing (and painfull) this is to read but I really do appreciate what your trying to do.
Im trying to think of any other info that might help diagnose the problem. Ill edit this if I think of anything since everyone in the states probobly gong to bed by now. Thanks again
-Chad

Chad,

if this problem started today then i would suggest waiting a day or two with your cable modem to chill out. sometimes its an external problem out of your control.. you can try these methods to see if things change....

1. unplug cable modem
2. make sure there is no splittler on cable modem (splitting your cable single can reduce bandwidth to modem)
3. reset router

since cable modems run on grids in your area it could be a problem with others users sucking in your bandwidth... give it a day or two and if it doesnt get better lets us know

I do have one splitter giving me cable tv to my living room and cable internet in my bedroom, but my situation in a little unique, I havent quite got around to letting my landlord know about me getting cable and Charter had legal issues about popping a hole in the wall of my bedroom to give me a cable outlet in there without notifying my landlord so I bought the biggest cable coax I could find (100ft) and ran that from the splitter in the living room to my bedroom. The only problem is my bedroom is just 20 or so feet from my living room so I have this humongous coax which could be dampening my signal. But then that would mean Ive been getting short changed for quite awhile but back on topic. That would make sense that the problem is on charters side since weve been storming around here lately, powers been goin on and off, minor flooding in some areas, and so on. So that could be. But I have a feeling Ill be back. Thanks again Joey.
