Default Boot Up Takes Ages

lHi, I reformatted my hard drive and installed Windows Pro. At first everything was running fine with service pack 2 installed, until I updated with windowsupdate and downloaded/installed all the updates in one go. After a single restart, I got the problems. Now when the computer has gone passed the XP loading screen, it hangs on a black screen for 5 minutes or so until it eventually comes back to life.

I have checked the msconfig too see if anything needs to be corrected there, however everything seemed OK. Next I defragmented my hard drive, ran an antivirus, ran an spyware scan but they didn't seem to help. I have updated my bios also.

My System Spec's are: 2.6ghz, 1.5gb ram, 120gb hard drive, X700 256mb, 400w psu, dvd-rw drive. Any help would be much appreciated.

Howdy sabkabbab and Welcome To PCHF,
Have you tried pressing F8 upon bootup and clicking the option last know good configoration. This should help your long boot time.

I have just tried it, there is some improvement but it still takes a while. Thank you for your prompt reply though.

Hya Sabkabab.

Did you have a firewall up when connecting to the net , and updating windows?

And have you also went back to winupdate to see if there are updates for the updates you just downloaded?
