Default Random Hangs

Hey guys, my computer has developed a very frustrating habit of hanging randomly. It seems to have some link to the CPU, as when I click and drag a window or scroll down a web page, it will hang for 20 seconds, then return to normal. I also notice that CPU usage spikes to 100% during these hangs.

I have formatted my HDD and reinstalled Windows, and the problem persists. I also have many fans in the case, and the temp reads only 25C.

In normal opperation the CPU makes a high pitched ring, but when it hangs it goes silent, if that means anything.

Im running an A64, Gig RAM and 6600GT, running XP.

 Hey Bronx,

Welcome to PCHF, we have a wonderful team of techs here, and I am sure that we can narrow down the cause of your problem.

Is that ring normal for your processor?
Can you please post the specs for your PC? MOBO, CPU, PSU, etc?

When you reformatted and reinstalled, did this problem happen immediately?

Look forward to your reply,

TTFN

Thanks for the reply Lady.

The ring has been there for a long time, its not very loud at all, you really have to listen for it. The very high pitch gives it away though.

Yes it was immediate.

Thats what gave me the idea it was CPU/hardware related.

Does the thermal paste ever need re-applying?

I agree with you, I think this is definitely hardware related.

I don't think that your thermal paste is going to be part of your problem as your temps are running fine.

Have you tried the PC with just the basics plugged in to see if there is a problem with one of your components?

Also, have you done any tests on your RAM sticks? Try the PC without them and then put in one at a time to see if any are damaged.
