Default Registry Cleaner XP Popup Boxes All The Time

Hey Guys,

I've just got this computer (laptop) and run the boot cd's to wipe it and re-install windows (xp pro). It was second hand and I didn't want any of the old junk left.

Anyway, Probably atleast once a minute I get a popup window that simple has 'Messenger Service' as the window name at the very top and in the task bar.

These popups are always about system errors and registry problems. They always tell me to go to registrycleanerxp.com or registrycleanergold.com or fixnow.net or many others that all revert back to the same site (registrycleanerxp).

I've downloaded that and it found 43 errors. The problem is that it won't fix them until I've registered. I've got another Registry Cleaner (Registry Mechanic 5) that I've run. It found more errors and fixed them.

Can anyone tell me why I still get these popups messenger service windows?
Why the Registry Cleaner XP demo still finds problems?
How these windows have started appearing instantly and why they're recommending this program which doesn't appear to be associated with Microsoft - would it be something built into the Toshiba boot CD's?

If it matters - the first thing I did after installing windows was setup the internet. The first messenger service window poped up as soon as I plugged in the network cord. This was pretty soon after the computer was ready for use but was very close together for me to think it was just co-incidence.

Thanks in advance, John.

Hi there John , welcome to PCHF.

That is the windows messenger service that is enabled by default when you install win xp , why that is... i don't know..

But don't believe those popups ,there just trying to fool you in downloading and buying those apps by finding false posititives. And there is a good change that they will/have infected youre pc since you downloaded them.

First uninstall what you downloaded through those popups , and then run this:

Please download Shoot The Messenger

Download and run the small (22 kbyte) "ShootTheMessenger.exe" utility. It will display the current status of your system's Messenger Service. The button near the bottom of its window will allow you to set the service to whichever state ? running or disabled ? that you desire.

If, for any reason, you should ever choose to re-enable the Windows Messenger Service, simply re-run ShootTheMessenger to do so.

And after that you might want to post a hijackthis log to see if those apps didn't install any malware. See below for a link.

hey mate,

thanks for that. i installed all the updates from the microsoft website, about 200 meg. that seems to have fixed the problem as i haven't gotten any messenger service interruptions in about 3 hours.

anyway, if they come back i'll do what you said and hope it works.

cya, john.
