Default How do I move files between PCs via ethernet?

I've got a CAT5 cable... but I'm not sure how to do this and an hour of messing around has yielded no results.

-do I need a router to do this or do I just directly connect them?
-should I use Files and Settings Transfer Wizard or is there some other program? I just want to copy certain files and folders
-do I have to mess around with the New Network Setup Wizard at all? Should the two PCs ''see'' each other anyway? They don't seem to want to detect each other. Both are XP.

If you're Lookin to transfer files between Pcs there are either Firewire or USB cables made just for that. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1051384689628

you could also connect two PCs with a network cable too. i believe a straight though cable will get the job done. you'll have to change the ip settings on both computers.

Yeah I'd like to do this via USB but it's not an option at this time, I gotta use ethernet right now. Just can't figure out how to get the two PCs communicating properly.
