Default [Fixed] Irql_not_less_or_equal

Decide to use my laptop (Toshiba Satellite A45/S250). The laptop was booting up fine, then during the XP load window a bunch of gobbly-**** appeared, the screen went black. I tried to restart and received a blue screen with this message: " A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you have seen this screen, restart your computer. If you get this screen again, restart your computer in Safe Mode and shut off the BIOS."

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I tried to restart but all that happens is the CD drive churns stops and then nothing.

Anybody have any ideas?

 Hi Edmund,

Welcome to PCHF. We have a marvelous staff of techs here and I feel confident that we will be able to help you resolve this.

Can you please post the remainder of the error? If you cannot recreate it and your computer will not boot at all, have you tried booting into Safe Mode?
Were you in the process of installing XP? If so, can you give us some more information about the exact order of events prior to the BSOD?

Look forward to your reply,

TTFN

The message you're getting is usually caused by a hardware problem. It's been my experience that about 90% of the time it's the CPU (over heating) or a bad stick of RAM. Some things you can check to determine the problem:

After booting up, check the tempature of the CPU and see if it's in the proper tempature range

Swap out the RAM for a stick you know is good

I kind of lean towards the overheating because you stated that it's up and running, then after a period of time; you get the fault message. If the RAM was bad, the message would appear almost immediately, whereas the CPU would take some time to generate the heat.

Again, these are just starting points to check first and may not be the problem.

Thanks to all. The problem seemed to be a BIOS problem. I was able to turn the BIOS off, switch the bott to the CD drive and used the recovery disk from toshiba. Then I downloaded a freezing fix from toshiba. This kept everything working until I could reload all of microsofts updates, especially service pack 2. All is working fine now. Edmund

 That's GREAT! Glad to hear that you found a fix. Thank you so very much for taking the time to post it. That could be very helpful for someone else having a problem like yours.

Look forward to seeing you in the forums.
