Default [Fixed] - PC freezes when playing video/audio

I have a problem which appeared few days ago. My PC freezes when i watch videos or listen to music. At first it was just video but then I couldn't even listen to music. It happens most of the time but not always. Sometimes I'm able to watch an entire movie, then I launch a short clip and 50 seconds in it freezes. Same with music.
I've reinstalled windows (im on Windows XP professional edition) and it didn't help.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Hi hush00!
Welcome to PC Help Forum!

Could you please post your system specifications?
Does this problem only appear when playing media, I mean not when playing games?
Also, what Media Player are you using to play the files?

Celeron 700, Riva TNT 2, 128mb, Win XP pro

I haven't played a game on PC in ages so can't tell you.
As for media players - I've had crashes in Winamp, VIPlay, bestplayer and media player classic so I guess player is not the issue :/

Hi there Hush00,
  • Make sure you are running the latest windows updates
  • Also could you follow `prework` in my signature and run Hijackthis plus Ewido and post the appropriate logs onto the forum for us.

As you mention you've reinstalled XP, I think malware isn't causing this problem. Anyway, follow the instructions Zimbo gave you.
I think there's a problem with your sound card. Do you know the type and are you sure the drivers are updated. It could have come loose so if you're able to I would suggest borrowing another soundcard to check if this makes a difference.

It doesn't seem to be the sound card. I unplugged it and just launched a movie with no audio. It froze :/

As for the logs, I can only provide Hijackthis log.
For some reason I can't scan with Ewido. Everytime I try it freezes. I've tried four times. I'll keep trying though.

No problems there it seems , except windows needs to be updated and you don't have a firewall installed.

PS: Did you just disable things with MSConfig? If yes , what where they?
