Hmm, speaking of the BIOS - i recently upgraded it to a newer version (straight after i had reformatted/recovered the system) but ive never had this problem before, so i doubt thats the problem.

The Bios also reads both sticks fine (512mb), so im stuck

Try it with first one stick , and then the other. (unplug the power cord when removing/switching)

After updating the bios , did you change any settings in there?

nope, left it all, the only "new" option i noticed in the bios is turning hyper threading on/off, and a slightly new interface.

but no, ive not change anything to do with the bios whatsoever.

i also just checked the RAM sticks, where fine (removed pc tower, but pulled em out anyway) they are fine, bit dusty, but fine .

But did you also try them one at a time?
They might look brand new on the outside , but inside they still could be busted.

PS, i don't really understand with what you mean with "removed pc tower".
And you could try to load the "default settings" in youre bios.
