Default I want to use my pc to record tv-hdtv

I have a dell setup pentium4 1 gig ram 250 gig hd with xp home that is hooked up 2 a 30 in hdtv tv which doubles as my monitor I can watch tv and surf ect at the same time. can someone tell me how I can interface the 2 so that I can use the computer as a tivo type device. there are many ins and outs from the tv and video card on the pc and the hd box from the cable co.I'm hoping that some software will make this happen and I know there are tv cards out there but it seems like a waste with the setup i already have.
thanks to anyone who responds

 Hey Mario Jr.,

Welcome to PCHF. We have a super team of technical experts on this site, and I am sure that we are going to be able to help you.

First of all, hardware is not my area of expertise, however, I can think of a few things that will help our hardware gurus to guide you through this.

Can you please post the make and model of your video card, and can you post shots of the in/out connectors on both the TV and the Vid card. Try to make sure that they are clear and legible so they can tell you what to connect where.

Also, can you please post the software that you plan to use, if you have one selected.

Look forward to your reply,

TTFN

LGW

All depends what video card you have. At this monment only video card I know that can record hd is the ATI all in wonder card's past the 9800 pro all in wonder.

But there are way's of rigging it up to record just takes about an hour and some wires. Let us know what vid card ya have:read2:

Sorry about that. I must have been dreaming or something :icon_scra

Since you have component video, (as I am sure your hd TV does) go and purchase yourself some descent Component plugs from like walmart. And there ya go. But you will also need to get a composite as well since component does not allow sound to pass through. Here is what component cord will look like

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=2625044

it will have a green, blue and red. not like the regular RCA ones where its yellow white and red.
