Default Laptop

Hi

I have a laptop made by Dell which recently suffered HD failure and was fixed. The error I received at the time was "unmountable_boot_volume". This was 2 months ago (incidentally just after the 2 year warranty on the machine ran out. :undecided ).

I'm now getting the same error and from what little research I have found/can understand it's either another problem with the HD or quite possibly some other kind of corruption. The problem I have is that I can't find out whether it's a hardware issue or not because I don't have my windows xp backup disk. I'm told it's possible to download the neccessary stuff onto my pc then use floppy disks but the laptop doesn't have a floppy drive.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried booting into safe mode? Do you get unmountable_boot_volume when booting to safe mode?

Hey Guys,

 First of all OF COURSE it was just after the warranty expired. Didn't you know that they have little tiny time bombs inside just waiting to go off as soon as the clock strikes twelve on the day your warranty expires.

@acdc, Welcome to PCHF, and thanks for helping out.

@Propertop, in your other thread you mentioned that the first time this happened it was determined that the problem was the harddrive, I believe that you also mentioned the HD being replaced. Did that originally solve the problem? If it did, then your HD should still be under warranty. I would certainly expect it to last longer than two months.

Also, when you say that you are missing the Windows XP backup disk, are your referring to the restore disk that came with the Laptop? It is my understanding that Dell can replace the disk for you. Does your laptop have a separate partition for the restore function?

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN
