Default .wma files won't rip and variable bit rates won't play

Greetings

I am using windows media player 10 on XP Professional. When I attempt to rip a cd using the .wma file it won't rip. I get an error without an error number that says Windows Media Player encountered an unkown error. This can occur when another program or operating system encounters a problme but does not communicate the nature of the problem to the player.

If I choose the .wma (variable bit rate) I can rip the music from a CD, but it will not play in the player. The same happens when I choose windows media lossless. I can rip with the MP3 format and it rips and plays just fine.

I was told by a tech support person that Windows Media Player does not support windows media audio. Go figure. Does anyone have a clue on this?

I bought the computer to be able to organize my music for dance parties....

So it goes

Thanks

hi aquatron, welcome to PCHF.

Sorry to hear about your problems...

Let's start by re-installing that sucker:
Go to > Control Panel > Add remove programs > Add/remove Windows Components > un-tick Windows Media Player in the list (this will un-install WMP) > click next and come out of that window. Then go back in and put a tick back next to Windows Media Player (this re-installs a clean copy). Click next and exit out of Control Panel.

Default Still the same

THanks Hengis

Followed your directions and still the same thing... I had done that earlier, but tried it again, with a reboot as well

Still the same problem

What next?

Thanks

So if you don't know why the .wma files won't rip or play... can someone confirm that they are supported by WMP 10? The tech support people charged me $60 to tell me they were not supported... that I needed real player to play .wma files

What's the scoop?

I thought that if you wanted to rip and play WMA files in WMP10 you just go to 'Tools' then 'Options' then select the 'Rip Music' tab and make sure that you uncheck "copy protect music"....?

Default Did that too...

I did that, and can rip the music using wma variable rate or lossless... but neither of those will play... the player looks at them, then skips til it finds an MP3 file and plays that. Cannot rip a straight wma file at all

Thanks
