Arrow xp format help please

hi i want to format my harddrive but its not working.
things i tried
1. right click on c:\ click format then it says it cant because somthing in windows is running yet there is nothing running.
2. i tried changing bios to boot from the cd drive and with the windows xp disc in there it just sits and does nothing... once i take the cd out and restart it starts windows normally.... weird.

can some 1 help me format plz be for this happends:computer_ .
i been looking how to format for over 9 hrs :o

pc specs might help not sure-
windows xp home edition
intel pentium 3 1.0 ghz
512 ddr ram
38.8 gig hd maxtor
lg cd/rw 32x burner
lg cd reader 52x max

Windows itself is running. You can only format non system partitions from within windows.

What do you mean exactly with that? Do you boot from the cd by restarting with the windows cd in youre drive and "hit any key" when asked during bootup to boot from the cd?

yes thats what im trying to do except the hit any key never shows up.

Hey Guys,

@Icehawk, have you tried using the Fdisk utility on a bootdisk, I know you got one when you were posting in Dhl's thread, so boot with it and try the following.

ok i got it to work but just b4 it was gonna format it said you cannont format you need SMARTDrive or you can do it but it will take a while.
so i clicked take a while but then it said i need 368 mb on the harddisk..? it said i dont have 368 mb but i have 22gigs free :o whats wrong help plz
