Default Trying to fix my cousin's comp...

I have never seen something like this before...

After you login, nothing happens. No icons, no nothing. The only thing I can do is CTRL+ALT+DEL and get to the Task Manager where I can manually launch system utils like msconfig, but I don't know what utils could be of any use, and thats pretty much the only one I know how to launch from the Run Dialog anyway. There is A LOT of stuff on here that he needs (school work, music, movies). So I would really appreciate any help on this so I don't have to reformat / reinstall everything.

Thanks.

Can you still boot up normally in safemode?

And try this run command:

sfc /scannow

with the XP/2000 cd in youre drive , maybe it helps.

Interesting... It scanned when booted normally, nothing happened, but it still scanned. When I rebooted into safemode, logged into Admin and tried again, this happened...

Windows File Protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files.

The specific error code is 0x000006ba [The RPC server is unavailable.].

Well, thats odd...

I just typed C: in the Run Dialog... all the icons, the taskbar, everything came back, but....

/idlist,:0:948,C:\

Windows cannot find '/idlist,:0:948,C:\'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

So does windows boot normally now , or just once?
And does safemode work ok , or does it also have the same prob?

And did this only popup once , or on every boot?

'/idlist,:0:948,C:\'

Also have a look if the "remote procedure call" is set to automatic in start/run/services.msc (or if needed trough the taskmanager)

nothing worked whether i booted normally or in safemode... but when i for some random reason decided to type c: in the run dialog, thats when that error came up, but thats also when everything fixed itself, so i rebooted again, did c:, and then did the prework, everything is working now. for the most part anyway.

That's good progres.

Do you mean the "malware prework"? If yes , then it might be a good idea to post the log files. (by attaching them to a post please) to see if there is more.
