If you already tried the
Microsoft KB 316524 then check your
WindowsUpdate.log that is in the %systemroot% folder, if you find the error
0x80070005 near the end of it then you should change the permissions for the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE in the windows registry. Administrator and System should have
Full Control and
Read and they musn´t take the permissions from a parent folder and you must replace the permissions for the child objects.
Hope this help you.
I forget to tell you something:
Windows Update depends on three windows services: Automatic Updates, Cryptographic Service and Background Intelligent Transfer Service (knowed as BITS) you should stop and disable this three services (
to get into the services managment console go to start / run / services.msc), most of the times you need to reboot, then you´ll be able to modify (empty) the SoftwareDistribution folder, if you cannot get into that folder because you have access denied, then change the permissions, provably the issue with WU came from there only. Remember to change the services to Automatic and to start them before getting into WU site again.
