Default Home networking - guest can logon, user can't

I added a password to my guest account, and one to my own account (called "bob") as well. While doing the latter, it asked if I wanted to make my documents private, and I said yes.

Now I can't even connect as "bob", though I do seem to be able to connect as "guest" (with the guest password, so at least that's working).

I tried deleting the password for "bob", and making my folder non-private, and restarting the PC - no change.

BTW - I'm connecting from a Mac running OS X 10.3.8. I was able to connect just fine before doing the password add/private designation bit.

Any advice, or am I just going to have to connect as "guest"?

- Bob

Welcome to PCHF!

Is Bob logged on at the moment you try to connect?
How are you trying to connect?

Well, I'm the only user on the PC, so I guess I'm logged on as me (bob). I see "bob's documents", etc. Locally - on the PC - that is.

Logging in from the Mac, I get the message "Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct" - this is when trying to log in via "Connect To Server" in OS X. Of course I've checked that my name & password are correct, and even tried deleting my account password on the PC.

If I try to log on via a Finder window (Network/MSHOME/thepcxp) I get "the alias "THEPCXP" could not be opened because the original could not be found" - but this is AFTER I input my username & password. And again, if I input "guest" and the guest PW I get on just fine.

Hey there BB

Are you trying to share a single folder or the entire hard drive?

I presume that the PC you are trying to connect to is running Windows XP.

Try the following:
Right click on the folder/disk you have shared and go to properties, then sharing > permissions.
Within that menu you should get the option to, forgotten the exact wording but basically apply changes to all the files in the folder.
Make sure that you username "bob" is in the list and then click on that button that applies changes to the folder.

If I remember the exact name I will post it. :undecided

Hi Zimbo,

Yes, XP on the host machine.

Right now the only folder shared is Shared Documents. There's nothing under Properties->Sharing about Permissions. I'm running XP Home SP2, if that makes a difference.

I did a search on "permissions" in Help and it told me to go to Network Connections and click on Incoming Connections, but that option doesn't appear for me in Network Connections.

Mine is the only account on this computer, and it's administrator-level, but could there be something that isn't turned on that's preventing me from getting at some of these options?

If it helps shed any light, the process I used (to set the guest password) is step one on this page:
http://netsecurity.about.com/cs/wind...aa042204_2.htm

The command line didn't want to let me quit, so I typed "exit" at the end and that quit it.

And then I just used the control panel for Users to add a password to my own "bob" account.
