Unhappy help, duplicate directory...

hi, i have been using internet download accelerator to download stuff to my external USB harddrive. One minute everything was working perfectly, and the next minute, everything was screwed up. I have no doubt this program is what caused my problem since it happened right after i downloaded something with it.

I have been downloading stuff to G:\<DIR b>\<subdir A> G:\<DIR b>\<subdir B> and so on. All of a sudden after I downloaded something using this program, everything in G:\<DIR b> is corrupted, but nothing else. All the subdirectories were unintelligible or garbled except for one, G:\<DIR b>\<subdir D>, which only had a single file in it. That certain directory previously had 50+ files in it and the file that is currently there, is the downloaded file that I believe caused this. Actually not the file, but I think the program caused this, by somehow creating a duplicate directory.

When I rebooted into linux, all the directories could be seen as their true names, and there were 2 of 'subdir D'. I then booted back into windows to rename the one that was visible, it didn't work though. Any ideas on how can to fix this?

If anyone can help, I will be greatful.

Thank you in advance!!

Hey D4z3d, and welcome to PCHF .

We have an excellent team with a wide spread of knowledge here and I am positive someone will come along shortly to help you.

In the meantime, could you please tell us what you downloaded using the IE Download Accelerator? More likely the problem is related to what you downloaded rather than the accelerator software.

Good luck, I hope to hear from you soon .

Hey Ryan,

Thanks for the welcome :-).

It was a movie file, specifically a WMV which was downloaded from a site that I have a membership to and download from frequently. I highly doubt that it was the file itself that caused the problem, especially since I noticed what was wrong before I ever opened it.

 Hello D4z3d n Confvz3d,

My welcome to you as well. I am afraid that your problems are more than likely caused by the movie you downloaded, but let's check you out for malware and see for sure.

Can you please follow th instructions for PreWork in my signature. Posting both the ewido and HijackThis logs back here.

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

LGW

Have a look in ?Add/Remove Programs? and if ?My Search Bar? , ?MyWay Speed Bar? or ?My Web Search Bar? is there then uninstall it.

You could also uninstall PartyPoker there , if you dont use/want it.

Then click Start>Run and type in: services.msc
Click OK
In the Services window find:

Remote Packet Capture Protocol

Select/highlight and right click the entry, and choose: Properties
On the General tab, under Service Status click the Stop button
Beside: Startup Type, in the drop menu, select: Disabled
Click Apply, then OK
Open HJT and click config > misc tools > ?delete an NT service?
Copy and paste:

rpcapd

Click OK.

Then fix these with hjt:

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0494D0D9-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {1D6711C8-7154-40BB-8380-3DEA45B69CBF} -
O23 - Service: Remote Packet Capture Protocol v.0 (experimental) (rpcapd) - Unknown owner - %ProgramFiles%\WinPcap\rpcapd.exe" -d -f "%ProgramFiles%\WinPcap\rpcapd.ini (file missing)
and delete the folder in bold.

Other then that i would also disable the messenger service:

Please download Shoot The Messenger
Download and run the small (22 kbyte) "ShootTheMessenger.exe" utility. It will display the current status of your system's Messenger Service. The button near the bottom of its window will allow you to set the service to whichever state ? running or disabled ? that you desire.
If, for any reason, you should ever choose to re-enable the Windows Messenger Service, simply re-run ShootTheMessenger to do so.
