Question Upgrading from Windows ME to Windows XP for an HP Pavilion

Hi everyone. I need help getting an hp pavilion to install windows xp. I can't seem to get it to reformat or install the xp disc. Can someone help me? I am not sure if it is a windows me issue or an hp pavilion issue. This is for my parents computer and windows xp would make it easier for them to use.

Thanks for any and all help.

Have A Great Day!!!

Hi Princessmo,

Welcome to PCHF. We have a very talented group of techs here and I am sure that we can help you resolve your difficulty.

First of all, can you tell me exactly what you have tried. I had a very difficult time doing this exact same thing on a Compaq, so I'm guessing it's an ME issue.

Also, can you give me the specs on your PC, and what cd version of XP you are using.

TTFN

LGW

Hi there Princessmo

Have you booted from the Windows XP CD?

If you boot off the CD and get to the installation screen, it gives you the option of deleting the current partitions.
Once deleted you can create a new one and format the system.

Hi there PrincessMo!

You got a Windows XP CD-Rom.
There are a few steps you have to go through to install XP.
First you should back-up files you want to save. Could be you don't need to back-up any, but if so think about it.
Then you'll have to format your drive. Easiest way is to do this with you XP CD, as Zimbo mentioned. If your harddrive is partitioned, the best way to get it clean is to remove all partitions and install XP on a new partition.
Your XP CD will lead you through the whole installation. It's gonna copy the Windows XP files to your harddisk, and then it will install Windows XP.

I have a trick way for you, it works for me. When HP loads in the beginning, quicky press f7 or f8 i forgot. It will bring u to the reformat screen. This way is good if you can't reformat using the xp disc.

Hope it helps.
