Default [FIXED] Multiple OS

Hi there
There are 2 harddisks in a PC (not mine). Both of the hard drives have Windows XP on it. The first hard disk is on the primary master, the other on the primary slave. The BIOS is set to boot from primary slave. That's OK because we want to boot from that disk. But now comes the question. How to change the boot.ini so that before Windows XP starts up from primary slave disk, the computer asks what operation system we want to run?

Bluefish

Hya Blue , you could add a line in the boot.ini manually. Something like from this: I.E.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Pro" /fastdetect
To this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Pro" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Pro" /fastdetect
(pointing to the right partition/HD ofcourse)

Or you can let windows rebuilt the boot.ini like this :

1.Boot with XP CD or 6 floppy boot disk set.
2. Press R to load the Recovery Console.
3. Type bootcfg.

and it should add both O.S's to the boot.ini.

Then have a look here for very detailed info on how to "build up" a boot.ini:

Hi there Joe!
Tried to manually change the boot.ini
But I was not sure where to put those 0's and 1's
Is it true that I have to change the partition? Because there are 2 disks, not to partition. Gonna check your other suggestions too!

No prob.

PS , in youre case you probebly only had to manually change the 0 after disk to a 1 in the new line , something like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Pro" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Pro" /fastdetect
