Default Corrupt Hard Drive Files?

Hi There

I'm new here, hope you guys can sort my problem out!

PC Specs - Pentium 2, Windows XP Pro, 80gig HD

The pc Im having trouble with has always played up. Sometimes it wouldnt start up, not even power up. If I left it over night it would normally work. I then discovered that if i dropped it slighty, it would switch on without me having to wait all night. Silly I know but it worked.

Including this problem was another, the HD used to make a loud whirring noise 60% of the time it was switched on. Last night i conneced a USB hub to it and it did not power up. I tried dropping it a couple of times... still no luck.

I left it overnight and this morning it did power up, but I got an error saying that one of the files in the system32 folder was corruped/damaged. Simple enough I thought, I put my xp cd in the drive and restarted the pc to do a repair. This is where it gets a little strange, it runs the CD, but after the "press f2 for automated system recovery" message its does not show anything else. The blue screen is still there with the white strip at the bottom, but no new text appears.

Im not sure whether it is the hard drive that is messed up or the fact that i attached the usb hub before starting up the pc that caused this problem, but I need it fixed as I have valuable data on my disk.

I do have an ultimate boot disk, but some of the recovery methods on there do not work as it never gets to the screen, it just loads up some drivers and then stops. I have also tried running in safe mode but as the drivers are loaded half way down the list it stops too. Also I have tried last known good config, that didnt work either

Kindest Regards

Jamie

Hya Jamie , welcome to PCHF. Can you test the HD in an other pc? It could be that its damaged.
Also have you disconnected the USB hub and tried again?
