Default WININET.dll and Crytographic Service Issues

I'm hoping one of you guys can help me out with abit of info. I am currently working on my sister's PC, as she has been having problems getting onto the internet.

As soon as the PC boots, it comes up with about 15 error messages, about programs and services that are unable to start, due to WININET.dll being missing.

After abit of a search on the internet, I found that this dll seems to be connected to IE, so I figure that may have been the cause of her probs.

Anyway, I thought installing SP2 (WinXP) would restore the dll, but when I try to run it, I am getting error "Setup would not verify the integrity of the file update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic Service is running on this computer."

When I try to start the Cryptographic Service, I get the message "Could not start the Cryptographic Services service on local computer. Error 126 The specified module could not be found."

Any thoughts/advice?

Cheers
S4LLY

Welcome back to PCHF , S4LLY.

Do you know how that started?

You can give this a try:

go to start / run and in the run window type in:
sfc /scannow >enter
Have you XP CD in youre drive, and it'll run itself, replacing any missign or damaged protected XP files.
It might also be a good idea to follow the instructions in the "Prework" link below and post the logs to see if malware is responsible.
