Hi guys,
I'm new to the site, hope someone can help me, I may need guding by the hand as I'm not massively up on computer jargon

I had some Adware, and in the process of trying to remove it I think I've deleted something that I need for my modem to work as it says "Modem removed" and obviously it isn;t being detected so I can't use it.
When i do System Resotre to a week ago it's there, and works fine, but as soon as I install any new software and restart my computer the modem goes again, as though it's automatically going back to the latest system restore point rather than remembering the one I've reset!
Can anyone offer advice. I can't find the disks to reinstall, and surely there must be a way of keeping the modem information from the system restore?

Welcome to PCHF - sorry it took this long to get to your post!

If you give us the make and model number of the modem, plus your Windows version we will find the correct drivers for your modem and get you up and running permanently again.

Many thanks for getting back to me, my modem is Intel(R) 536EP v.92 Modem (Com3)
And it's Windows XP.

Hopefully you can help - it's driving me mad!

I've searched other posts and found sites for downloading drivers and got the ones I thought were right - but not sure how I install them? Should Add Hardware automatically find modem if driver files are on my PC?

The best way to install your drivers would be as follows:

If there is a setup.exe file then you can run that otherwise you will have to do it through device manager.

To get into device manager you can use the keyboard shortcut:
While holding the windows key, press the Pause / Break key, then click on Device Manager.

Once inside there locate your modem and go to the properties of it, then click on the driver tab and - Update driver.
You will be able to browse to the location of your download file and windows should install it from there.

If that doesn't work then you can download the drivers from here:

OK, thanks for that, I've tried it, but the thing is my modem is removed and actually no devices at all are listed on the device manager! I found some instructions for how to reactivate this (by ensuring plug and Play options were set to automatic) but they were, and it's had no effect - everything is still missing. Up until last night System restore was bringing everything back but it's now stopped working for some reason. I'm now wondering if the sytem.exe file that recognises the plug and play is deleted?

I cna only now access the Internet atr work to post on here.

The best thing to do is to remove your modem from the computer (physically).

Then bootup into windows, once you are in windows shutdown your computer again.

Then fit the modem back into your computer and boot your computer into windows.

Once in windows it should auto-detect the modem.

(I am assuming it is an internal modem, if not you can still follow these instructions except instead of removing the modem, simply remove the cable that attaches it to the computer)
