Default Can't log into Windows XP

Anyone tell me how to fix my PC? 10/8/05 PC worked fine. 10/9/05 turned on PC, after boot a log on window came up (never been there before) it promted me to click icon to log on. I clicked the icon, screen flashed..logging on a split second later flashed logging off. After many attemps to log on I restarted in safe mode. After boot a log on screen appeared with two icons, the original plus administrator, clicking on either netted the same results as before. If someone could get me past this screen and to the start page I know how to run restore. Obviously, I,m posting this on my old PC.
I'm running XP Home on the broke one. .....THANKS

Default Wacky computers

Hi Ubmoon,

Welcome to PCHF. We have a team of really great people with a wide variety of computer expertise, and I am sure that we are going to be able to get you back up and running.

When you get the log on screen in Safe Mode, if you single click Administrator, does a white dialog box appear? If so type in admin and hit enter.

Look forward to your reply,

TTFN

You could also try clicking last known good configuration that worked instead of safe mode and see if that help's. It will be in the list when you press F8 upon bootup.

T... No dialog box appears.
I can get to the set-up screen by tapping ctrl+alt+delete on boot-up. In the advanced section a warning comes up "setting incorrect values can cause system malfunctions". There's a boot set-up default option, didn't know if I should try that or not. Don't want to make things worse.
Thanks again.

Hey Guys,

I would think that using your default settings would not cause a problem. But I would like you to wait to hear Merlin's advice, he is more familiiar than I with this sort of thing, and since he didn't respond to that part of your post, I would think it prudent to hear his opinion before proceeding.
