Hi there San Franpsycho!
I don't know what your Compaq restore setup looks like, but if you have got a mouse-cursor available during the installation, can you still move it when the setup hangs? Just want to know whether your setup stucks or the whole computer. (Sorry not sure about the English in that last sentence, I'm from Holland you know..)

Normally laptops only have 1 fan at the back of the case, the ones at the bottom are just "breath holes"
The re-installation requires putting in 1 disc at a time with 4 discs total. I can tell the computer is working really hard while doing this, it makes a somewhat loud sound and gets hot rather quickly. Each disc approximately has 25% of info as it installs. When 1 disc is done installing, it prompts you to put in the next disc and the percentage bar fills up as it installs.

I've gotten as far as the 3rd disc before the computer completely shuts itself off, but when I tried again a couple of days ago, it wouldn't even get passed the 1st disc.

The laptop doesn't boot up to windows at all, it's been uninstalled when I began the process.

I do not have any info I require in the laptop, I was just restoring to factory settings so I could sell the laptop to a friend.

You said your laptop was 3/4 years old so I'm pretty sure there not any guarantee on that any more isn't it? I'm afraid something really in there really is broken. But someone might come up with another suggestion. Hope so!

Yes, there is a mouse cursor while re-installing, but I'm not sure what you mean by "hangs". Sorry, I'm not a computer expert at all. :icon_scra

Yeah, it's about 3 or 4 years old. I'm guessing something is broken, hopefully this is something that can be repaired

Could be just my English. When a computer in Holland 'hangt', everything stucks, so that you can't even move the mouse cursor anymore :P. If you should still have been able to move the mouse your computer was still accessible but the Setup was not able to get any progress.

Oh, I see, no the computer doesn't do that at all, it completely shuts off.
