:-D Hi Bencho,

Welcome to PCHF. Glad to see you were reading the forums. Ah yes, theavengingduck, one of my favorite screennames. LOL

OK, now on to your situation. We have a whole team of terrific and knowledgable people here, and I am sure that we can help you get your WinAmp back.

First, let's check for malware, to cross that out.

Can you please download CCleaner, and HijackThis! from my signature. Install them making sure that HijackThis is installed into it's own folder.

Run CCleaner making sure that all options are selected, including Advanced, answer Yes to any warnings. Click on Analyse, let it run, when it is finished, click on Run Cleaner. Exit when it is finished.

Next, before running HJT, make sure that all files and folders are showing. (in Windows Explorer, click on Tools, Folder Options, View, Show all Hidden Files and Folders.

Run HJT using the top option of saving a log. Save the log to your desktop and Attach it to the bottom of your post.

Look forward to your reply,

TTFN

Do you have an illegal version of Windows XP?
Also where did you download your WMP10?

Hello and welcome to PCHF chaplin

We will take a look at that log file for you.

I presume you have already tried to download and reinstall windows media player 10:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win.../download.aspx

Have you seen this post from the microsoft site, try what they recommend for removing WMP10:

2.3 How do I uninstall Windows Media Player 9 Series or later?

The procedure varies depending upon which version of the Player you are running.

Windows Media Player 10

If you have installed Windows Media Player 10, you can roll back to the version of the Player that was on your computer before installing Windows Media Player 10.

To roll back from Windows Media Player 10 to a previous version, do the following:
  1. In Control Panel (Category View), click Add or Remove Programs.
  2. Click Remove a program, and then do one of the following:
If you are running Windows XP Service Pack 2, select the Show updates check box (at the top of the list), click Windows Media Player 10 (in the Windows Updates section), and then click Change/Remove.
    - or -
If you are running Windows XP Service Pack 1 or earlier, click Windows Media Player 10, and then click Change/Remove.
You can also use System Restore to roll back to the previous version of the Player. For more information about System Restore, see the Use System Restore to Undo Changes if Problems Occur page.

Windows Media Player 9 Series

The method for removing Windows Media Player 9 Series from your computer varies depending on the version of the Windows operating system your computer is running.

If your computer is running this operating systemDo thisWindows Millennium Edition, Windows XP Home Edition, or Windows XP Professional
Use System Restore in Windows. Windows Media Player 9 Series will be removed and the previous version of the Player will be restored.

Any CD tracks that you had ripped (copied) to your computer will remain and can be played in the previous version of Windows Media Player.

For more information about System Restore, see the Use System Restore to Undo Changes if Problems Occur page.
Windows 98 Second Edition or Windows 2000
In Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs, and then click Windows Media Player. Windows Media Player 9 Series will be removed.

For more information about adding or removing programs, see Windows Help.

2.4 How do I remove Windows Media Player from my computer entirely?

Windows Media Player is a feature of the operating system and cannot be removed entirely. However, depending upon which version of the Player and Windows you are using, you might be able to revert to an earlier version of the Player or remove access to the Player.

If you are running Windows Media Player 9 Series or later, you can revert to an earlier version of the Player. For more information, see question 2.3.

If you are running Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows XP SP2, Windows 2000 SP3, or Windows 2000 SP4, you can remove access to Windows Media Player by using the Set Program and Access Defaults feature. Note that this only removes links to the Player. It does not remove the Windows Media Player software. To remove access to Windows Media Player, do the following:
  1. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  2. Click the Set Program and Access Defaults button, and then choose a configuration (such as "Non-Microsoft" or "Custom").
