Don't give up, I went from a Compaq PC loaded with ME, I got tons of errors when I tried to move to XP, what ended up working was giving up on switching to the NFTS file system and letting it stick with FAT32. It's not the best but it worked, and the funny thing is that once I got XP installed, I was able to reformat to NFTS and multiple partitions.

It is definitely worth the move, I put it off way too long. Give it a try.

you can put your xp cd back in reboot, and once it is done going through it's motion's, just click C to create a partition or do an upgrade first, then reinstall XP.
