I have an emachines PC which came with a "restore disk" copy of XP that says it only works on emachines PCs. The hard drive in this PC has recently started to make high-pitched noises, so I figured it was on it's way out and bought a new hard drive from Western Digital. But now I'm not sure if the emachines restore disk will work if I install the new hard drive. Does anybody know if I will have to buy a whole new copy of XP? I don't want to install the new hard drive and then be left with a non-working PC until I can afford a new copy of XP!

Hello c34343 and welcome to the forums.

You shouldn't need to purchase another copy of windows. Restore CD's normally don't worry about what hard drive you have in your machine.

Disconnect your old hard drive, plug in your new one and try to install windows using the Restore CD that you were given.
