Default Geez, what is the deal??? Nothing but problems for months now...

Hi guys, I'm new here so go easy on me. I built this computer 6 months ago & have upgraded everything in it except the RAM & processor. Here is the info:

Operating System System Model
Windows XP Professional (build 2600) MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD MS-7125 1.0

Enclosure Type: Desktop

Processor a Main Circuit Board b
2.20 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64
256 kilobyte primary memory cache Board: MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD MS-7125 1.0
Bus Clock: 201 megahertz :-o Shouldn't this be like 2000mHz with an AMD?
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies, LTD 6.00 PG 06/03/2005
Drives Memory Modules c,d
73.99 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
71.24 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space

ATAPI-CD ROM-DRIVE-56MAX [CD-ROM drive]

WDC WD740GD-75FLA1 [Hard drive] (73.99 GB) -- drive 0 1024 Megabytes Installed Memory

Slot 'A0' has 512 MB
Slot 'A1' has 512 MB
Slot 'A2' is Empty
Slot 'A3' is Empty
Local Drive Volumes

c: (NTFS on drive 0) 73.99 GB 71.24 GB free

Anyways, my CMOS won't hold my BIOS settings for anything. I have received a few error messages during post, but the normal one is defaults loaded, reset your overclocks. I have also got one that says CMOS battery failure and display switch set incorrectly. I got these message a few weeks ago & bought a new CMOS battery & everything worked fine until recently when I changed out my video card (went from X800XL to X850Xt, it did this before when I went from my 6600gt to the x800xl). Does anyone have a solid possible answer for this problem? I really don't want to buy CMOS batteries every month.

:-) Hey Pr0d1gy,

Welcome to PCHF. Don't worry, we go easy on everybody. There are some really great people on this site and I am sure that we are going to be able to help you solve your problem.

Hardware is not my area of expertise, but I do think that trying the cmos battery once more is a good test, it may be that you have something that is shorting out your battery.

It would be very helpful to the hardware gurus if you could list all of the error messages that you are getting. Also, did this occur immedidately after changing your video card, or did it work for a bit after that?

Look forward to your reply,

It happened right the day after I installed the video card. I have done some other research & found that the MSi Neo4 motherboards have a pension for eating CMOS batteries for some reason. Unfortunately, that means some downtime is in order, but the good thing is I have a definite answer at least. Thanks for the help & I will be back I'm sure.

:-D You are certainly welcome,

I would check back tho, the guys may have a work around for you that would keep you from having to buy CMOS batteries by the gross.

I'm gonna leave this open for the present. Check back and see if they have any ideas for you.

Hi there,

Firstly, check that the battery is seated correctly and before carrying out my suggestion below, find the bios reset jumper (consult the manual) on the motherboard and carry out a bios reset. Go into the bios and select "Default settings". If that doesn't solve your problem, continue with this....

Choose your motherboard version here: http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p...class=mb&cpu=3 go to the downloads section & download the latest bios and bios flashing tool. Print off the bios upgrade instructions and follow them to the letter. When you have completed the upgrade, go into the bios and select "load default"

Post back with your results.
