Depending on the program that you are wanting to startup this can be a simple process.

All you have to do is create a link to the file in your start menu so for example if we wanted Microsoft Word to open everytime we started the machine we would do the following:

Find out the exact location of the file you want to open, in this case it would be - C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\WINWORD.EXE

If you are using Windows XP you can click on Start - All Programs and right click on "Startup" and choose explore.

Create a new shortcut by right clicking in the white space and choosing new - shortcut.

Simply enter the location of the file you want to open, then click next, give the shortcut a name, and click finish.

Voila that should be it,

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Menu Start\Programs
There you'll find a map called Startup
Create a shortcut to the program you want to start, in that map.
You did it!
I think but not sure that you can use your own user name instead of 'All Users'.
