Default Explorer Application Error

I am using Windows XP Pro w/SP2.
Everytime I open a specific folder (My downloads folder) I get this error.

"Title: explorer.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x1c403c18" referenced memory at "0x00000011". The memory could not be "read"

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program"

END

If i cut the contents of the folder and create a new folder I can then access that new folder w/o the error. However, if I create a folder with the same filename ("Downloads") I then get the error.

Can I fix this? Any suggestions?

can you do this for me.. put your XP cd in the drive.. exit out of it when it asks you what you want to do.. go to run and type in command...when the black box comes up type this is chkdsk /r (notice the space btween the k and the / then it will ask you to reboot. Do so and this should fix your problem!!

No I am now getting a different error:

Title: Explorer.exe - System Error

Unknown Hard Error

END

I got this as I pasted some files from another folder.

It's only now that I am getting these explorer.exe errors. I have never seen them before.

Edit: Yeah the error is coming up everytime I paste something. =/

Noooo, I now cant open msn messenger or other .exe programs. What did chkdsk do? It's made it worse.
