when my desktop pc running xp and crashes and i restart iit no longer goes through the scan disc for errors phase it just restarts back into windows XP is there any way i can enable this procedure after a crash

XP right? - run a full scandisk within Windows and see if it works again next time you boot after a crash.

done this crashed it still no scan disk or dskchk xp any more ideas

Can you change this regkey to your registry? (Case sensitive)

from this:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet \Control \Session Manager]BootExecute = autocheck autochk *


to this:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet \Control \Session Manager]BootExecute = autocheck autochk /f *

If the key is not there you can create it manually, this forces a checkdisk during startup
