Default [FIXED] Ping not responding on new wireless PC

Hello and thanks for letting me ask a question.? I have been asked by someone who thinks I know everything about PC's to help install a new machine on his home network.? The exixting network is a Sony Tower connected to a Linksys wireless router by LAN.? The router is also connected to a Cable modem by LAN. I can ping a Sony Vaio to the tower with no problem through the wireless connection.? It is running ME with NO Norton.? I can get on the Internet from the Vaio laptop through the tower also.

The new machine is a Acer 3000 with a wireless card.? I had to manually configure the IP address to be part of the existing network. The original address stated with 168 and the exixting network is 192.? The status of the Network is connected with the IP I have assigned.? The RF link is Good.? I can not however ping the tower or the laptop.? The only thing I see different in the 'ipconfig /all' is the Node type is "Unknown".? I have disabled both Norton and Microsoft security.? I am at a loss.? The ping returns "Timed Out".
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Dan

:-) Hi? Wings515,

Welcome to PCHF. I want you to know that there are some incredibly talented folks here. This is not my specialty. However, my husband and I just had a similar problem with our LAN,? installing a Lincsys wireless router into a LAN that was already running a Lincsys land router over a cable modem. The issue turned out to be the location that the wireless router was plugged into the land router.

However, if I am understanding correctly, your situation is adding in a seperate PC, wireless, onto the system.

Just a couple of questions, how many of the PCs on this LAN are running wireless and how many are connected directly into the router?

Did you test ping capability of system prior to ip configuration on the new PC?

Are all of the PCs on the LAN running ME?

Thanks, don't fret the guys here are amazing. I am sure we can get you the help you need.

TTFN

Thanks for the quick reply.
To answer your questions:
A) This new machine is the second on the wireless network, the first (Sony Vaio) is still working fine.
B) The Sony Tower is the only PC connected to the router, the cable modem is the other device on the router.
C) I did not test ping before the new PC was installed but Ping is working on the lod two machines.
D) Only one the Sony Vaio is running ME and that is still working.

The new machine and the Sony Tower are running XP Home.
Hope this gives more insight.
Oh BTW the Acer and Vaio are sittng next to each other in the next room from the Linksys.

:-) No problem Wings, that's what we're here for.

Something else occured to me, please don't be insulted, because this is one of those basic things that sometimes gets overlooked, but did you set up all PCs to be on the LAN? Can they see each other?

The exixting machines are "seen" but if the ping does not go through teh new machine is not "seen" on the LAN

:-) Hi Wings,

I understand what you are saying I just wanted to make sure that you in fact set up the new PC to be on the LAN, for example the last LAN I set up required me to run the ICC Wizard on each computer before it would be recognized. I know it's basic, but sometimes those are the ones you miss first.
