Just thinking about this a little more, if I do indeed have the cable modem connected to the linksys via LAN and the Sony Tower also connected to the Linksys via LAN, then the two wireless laptops would not need Internet Computer Sharing since they are connected to the internet via the wireless link on the Linksys router. They would not be going through the Sony Tower and using it as a router. Is that not correct?
Thanks for all the feedback.
BTW the tow "older" PC's are still working fine on the unchanged network. It is only the newest Acer that will not communicate. Now here is another piece to the puzzle. Before anthing was started with respect to networking, Acer required a backup be made of the system. This burnt 4 CD's. Maybe something happened during the compiling of the backup because the next thing I tried to do was establish wireless connectivity. The wireless network interface was part of the machine when purchased. It was pre-installed!
Thanks
Dan

If you have a wireless router WITH ethernet wired ports then you will not need to have Internet Connection Sharing on your set up at all. The PCs/laptops should all happily connect to the router either by hard wire or via the wireless link.

That's what I thought. Now to the problem of why the ping does not work. Without the need for ICS, the ping should go through the router easily. Still waiting to find out what the correct path in the registry is to change the Node type from unknown to something else. I am wondering if running the restore CD's will correct the problem or is this outside the functions of the recovery discs.

On the PC where you are getting the "unknown" response - remove the network card drivers - re-boot and re-install them (latest version). Then set the IP address as DHCP - leave the rest blank.

The last time someone removed the drivers I had to re-install the whole OS. By removing the drivers do you mean going into the network functions and deleting the TCP/IP driver rebooting and go back to the screen and do an add? Or are you referring to the wireless card driver? If you mean the card driver, I don't know if this is available on the recovery discs or not. Should these drivers be accessed in the System Screen and are kept in the OS?

There was one curious thing I noticed, at some point I tried to setup DHCP by checking the "assign network address automatically". This is usually in the network setup. This screen did not come up the DNS Server screen came up. Could this be part of the problem?
