Default [Answered] Disable networking on XP.

: I'm using fiber optics Internet, and I recently setup a network for my home through the Wizard that XP provides. Once I had finished the Wizard and restarted the computer, I noticed I was networked to every other PC on the fiber optics gateway my ISP has me running from (I run from a special one because I lease IPs). Fiber optics is one big network, no modems, just Cat5 straight to the PCs, so now I'm networked to everyone on my gateway. I need to know how to either get rid of these other people or disable networking completely. Being networked to these people not only provides a risk, but it also has slowed my Internet speed noticable because of the number of people I am now networked with, and the distance the signal has to travel to network with them. Thanks in advance.

Hi mike22e, welcome to the PC Help Forum.

The easiest way to stop this is to remove "file and printer sharing" In the networking properties - this will remove any change for someone to 'stumble" onto your computer by accident. However - if someone knows your IP address then they will be able to get onto it still.

Thus - get yourself a firewall - Windows Firewall is good enough - and have it set to max security so that nothing can get through.

If you read this post - I hope this info helps...and i apologise that noone has given you an answer since you asked.

If you have any further questions, please let me know.

Marked as answered for now.
