Default [Pending] Explorer.exe in XP randomly stops responding

I started having this problem not too long ago and have limped along until finding time to research and resolve the issue.

It goes as follows...

OS: Windows XP SP2 with all updates
MOBO: Asus P5GDC-V Deluxe (LGA 775, Intel 915)
Boot Partition: Onboard ITE PATA RAID (Two 20GB Seagate with RAID 0)
CPU: 3.4GHz
Memory: 1GB
All drivers have been updated.

A month or two ago I started having random lock-ups when accessing files through folders, opening folders, and closing folders. Never had a problem with any applications or accessing files within the applications. I get no errors other than the "Stopped responding" status in Task Manager next to the folder(s) that hung at the time explorer.exe locked up. If I end task on the folders I can again browse files for a while until the lock-ups ocurr again randomly.

I have done numerous searches on this topic on google, yahoo, etc... and have not found anyone else with the same issue, only similar issues. I have tried just about all the proposed fixes with no luck including, but not limited to, checking for viruses, adware, malware, spyware, context menu issues, registry repair, etc...

Short of reinstalling XP from scratch, does anybody have any suggestions that may help isolate the cause of this issue?

Welcome to PC Help Forums

Can you go into your event viewer and let us know what it says in there. May be one appliation fowling everything up.
Right click my computer...click on manage ..click event viewer..then on applications..see what errors are there...then onto system see what error messages are there

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, event viewer does not show any errors from this lockup. :-( The only other thing that is strange is that sometimes when I shutdown I get an "End Now" popup from the MCI Command Handler.

I have a couple more Video Editing projects to finish up and I think I'm just going to re-install XP from scratch and keep an eye on the system after every application I load.
