Default registry problems re-occuring

I have recently installed XP with SP1 onto a machine, i know that the disc is a good copy cos i have recently used it on another machine with no problems. the problem i am having with the latest machine, is that everytime i o to install a program I.E. office, printer or camera drivers. it freezes up half way through, i ran a registry scan using "registry mechanic 5.0" and it found several problems, and then fixed them, so i tried to re-install the above and still the same problem, so i ran the reg mechanic again, and it found some of the same errors again, can anyone suggest anything please

Maybe a re-install or update is in order:

Windows Installer 3.0 Redistributable
