Default [FIXED]DirectPlay8 Peculiar Failures

Guys

I am new to this posting messages business as before I have used this dinky brain of mine to solve PC issues, but I am completely stuck. Apologies if this post is a bit messy...

The deal is that I have PCA attached via USB to a BT1250 (2 Wire) Wireless ADSL router and another PC, PCB attached wirelessly at 802.11b. Normally LAN games will work fine either by IPX or TCP/IP but when I attempt via DirectX/DirectPlay things just do not work.

Tests prove that PCB is working fine and dandy but PCA stumbles under both Test DirectPlay and the tests under DirectPlay Voice Options. I have scoured the internet for solutions, reinstalled all drivers and am on the verge of taking DirectX off via DirectX Happy Uninstall from download.com (however I fear that this course of action may turn a nuisance into a disaster!).

Both PCA and PCB have the same legit version of McAfee security suite, i've conducted tests on all UDP ports, etc, etc so no software is causing blockages. I have read about UPnP causing issues yet the router I have does not seem to have any configuration for disabled UPnP (not that i'd want to) and besides the issue is only on PCA.

The image attached is a screenshot of what happens under the DxDiag>Network tab when selecting Test DirectPlay>DirectPlay8 TCP/IP Service Provider>Create New Session.

I am wondering if there is an issue between DP8 and connecting via USB to a network device(?)

If anyone has had similar problems or knows what I am doing wrong please let me know...

I have been tinkering with the virtual memory settings quite a bit, to no avail. The settings are currently on Initial & Maximum at 2000MB, before they were 512 and 1024. I also have the very latest DirectX 9.0c...

Default Case Closed, Hoorah

I've just found the solution...finally.

I disabled McAfee Privacy Service (MPS) as part of the Internet Security Suite (ISS), which did nothing to alleviate the problem. I then disabled the whole MPS install and everything now works fine.

Apparently MPS feels that DirectPlay8 and various outher DP related bits of DirectX are not secure enough for MPS to allow them to work therefore it blocks them rendering them unusable. Whether the issue lies with McAfee or DirectX is one for debate but uninstalling MPS means that the problems stop and everything is ticketty-boo.

Merlin, thanks for your message...firstly for the welcome, and secondly for your post which somehow prompted me to scrutinise what McAfee's ISS was up to.
