Can you do me a favor. Reboot the PC and go into your Bios, and (you will have to search a little as I do not know the exact for this specific board) press reset to default's.. Also make sure hyper threading is turned on, Also for video card drivers I always recommend the Omega drivers which can be found HERE.. Just look for your chip set under the nvidia chip set's. Also you look below in my Sig and look at Black vipers site. If your a gamer, there are many things you can turn off that window's thinks should be turned on. And when you get the BSOD what is the Error message?

And maybe a bios flash will help,, Go HERE to download the utility, that helps find exactly what flash you need.

i dont seem to be getting BSOD any more so thanks
the computer now generally seems to running fine after installing the programs you advised and tweaking some of the drivers.

I do however expect either the RAM or the cpu to be under performing. Is there any way i can check this? With a program or something which does a speed test on the cpu and tests memory or something?

Any help greatly appreciated.
