this component is not listed in my "add/remove". is there somewhere else i can look?

The Image drive should be located in your device manager.. Make sure it can see hidden devices. At the topof your device manager it says view then tick see hidden devices. Look for nero image or virtual drive and uninstall it.. Did you upgrade to SP2?

Personally to me this seems like a bit of a malware issue...but a complete uninstall of Nero - followed by a Windows Installer Cleaner Utility (provided free from Microsoft here www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Secure-cleaning/Windows-Installer-CleanUp-Utility.shtml) and then reinstall Nero without any virtual drives would have told us the answer.
