Do you have a second computer or a friends computer that you could stick this hard drive into and partition it from there?

i do but my broken drive is a SATA, and my old pc is IDE (i think),,are they compatable in ant way?

yes as long as its not a serial ata it will still be able to connect to the ribbon as a master or slave

it is SATA (serial)ATA..i guess im stuffed

some SATA drives still can use the IDE ribbon. If you look on the back of it is there the long input or just a short little one?

it appears all my problems came from the fact i was trying to reinstall/upgrade with a non SP2 upgraded version of xp,,my pc shipped with SP2 installed,but the recovery disc was not upgraded to SP2 and would not recognise my SATAdrive at all...grrrrr,

anyway i am now happily looking at the blue format screen,slowly chugging through my 200Gb of HD space..lets hope thats the end of my problems
