Hi I did an auommatic update because the icon appeared. It was an amalgamated collection of fixes as there will be no SP5. After the installing it asks to reboot OK but it fails to shut down. The screen switches off 'no signal' but the computer is still going and the hard drive light is on. It won't respond to ON/OFF switch or reset button.
Pulling the plug and waiting a bit it reboots and seems to work fine. Still won't shut down though.
I would really appreciate help I'm a second year electronics student and it's got all my work on it. I'm worried it will hang for good!

What is the name of some of the updates, that way I can search for bugs in those updates that would keep you from shutting down your computer.

The worst thng is the monitor turns off so you can't see what's happening!

Go into "Safe Mode" and remove the offending KB's thru add/remove in control panel

Ok I removed them and reinstalled them no joy. In desperation I ran a free program called Regisitry mechanic. I felt a bit uneasy but it's b***** fixed it!
I'm going to buy another HDD and make a clone. Thanks for your help
