Default [Fixed] computer freezes when playing video in any media program

Hey, hope someone can help me with this as im a bit baffled, and dont want to format as yet so am looking for another way around.
Right, in ANY program that plays video, the machine hangs (turns out that the program starts using 99/100% of the system resources) so i have to ctrl+alt+del and end the task to get it all back to normal.

This is strange as it is up to MP3s ans cds and such in these programs (for example MediaPlayer 10) and the machine is up to much more intensive stuff, ive been playing the battlefield 2 demo with no problems.

My Machine is as follows

AMD Athlon XP 3000+
512MB DDR Pc2100
128mb AGP Geforce 6600GT
80gb HDD (4gb free)
Gigabyte GA-7VAXP Motherboard (5 PCI, 1 AGP, 3 DDR DIMM, Audio, LAN, IEEE-1394)

Its running Windows XP Pro with service pack 2 installed.

Check this link > http://www.familyroberts.plus.com/system.jpg for a picture of my task manager, with all the running processes displayed.

http://www.familyroberts.plus.com/systemhang.jpg - while its hanging

I have tried re-installs of software (WM10 and real alternative player)

Thanks for any help i hope someone can shed some light on the situation. If u want any more info just ask .

added: I have done full virus and spyware scans. And scandisk, and a bunch of other stuff.

Welcome to the forums Deathcod

Right I know you have said that you have run Antivirus software but it seems like this error is normally due to virus like activity.

Could you search your machine for wmplayer.exe

If it finds more than 1 entry (which should be in C:\Program Files\----- ) then delete the extra entries.

Let us know how many you find !

thanks for the welcome .. i did the search and it found 8 entries. I did the same search on my brothers WinXP SP2 machine and it found 11 entries, but his computer works fine.

here is a pic of what was found, i aint deleted anything yet, because they are almost the same as the ones on his machine. He doesnt have the one in service pack files tho (his machine is preloaded with WinXP Home and service pack 2, mine is XP Pro and after installed SP2)

please note that the problem is not isolated to mediaplayer, it also happens in other programs like DivX Player and Real Alternative player.

i have uninstalled and reinstalled these programs, for no change.

Change your Virtual memory to "Let windows manage"

Check your startup tab in start > run > msconfig and make sure that there are no "odd" entries.

Also, do you have any external USB devices that the media players might be trying to synch with? MP3 players, Webcams, External Hard drives etc....

Try moving your media files to another folder, then uninstall and re-install media player and let it search your PC for the media.

I changed the Virtual memory to no avail

i checked ms config as one of the first things, i dont think there is any odd entries

I dont have anything that media players might want to sync with in.

I also tried movin files and reinstalling players, also to no avail.

What is strange however is that I can play a 1.6mb AVI, but not a 127mb Avi, i dont seem to be able to play anything else.

Quicktime locks the computer up so bad that i cant CTRL ALT DEL it, its a reset button jobby.

Im still stumped , maybe its getting closer to format time ...

Hi,

There is clearly something missing that is common to the media on your PC (well, the playback at least). Did you try SFC / Scannow? to replace missing or corrupt XP files? http://volito123.com/pcadvice_volito..._xp_and_ME.htm
