Windows XP/2000 - [Answered] Help with formatting posted in the Operating Systems forums; I just formatted my computer with fdisk and then started to load windows xp, but I keep getting this error message......unknown hard error....\systemroot\system32\ntdll.dll Please help me! what should I do?? ...

The best approach for you is to FDisk again and re-install XP again. But before you do, this error could be related to your memory (RAM). Download the bootable floppy version of this: Memtest86 and run it from boot. This will test whether you have a memory error.

still not working, when I go to try and fdisk again it says missing file command.com??
Any suggestions?

Grab a bootdisk file from here: www.bootdisk.com

Get a floppy disk, put it in the drive and run the file you downloaded. Next boot your PC with the floppy disk in. You will be able to run FDisk from the C:\ prompt once you have booted with a boot-disk.

ok did that and still the same error message, but when I try and fdisk again it wont even let me do that says "remove all media and restart" Now what? Another question, I loaded a win 98 boot disk, now that it is half way win xp. should I get a xp bootdisk or does that matter??

You should use a Windows XP disk...

Lets start over,

Set the boot order in your BIOS to boot from CD-ROM first, then place the windows XP cd into your drive and start your computer.
It should ask you to "Press any key to boot from CD" so press a key at this stage.

It should then boot into a setup menu for Windows XP where you can create / delete your partitions. My recommendation to you is to delete your partition and create a new one, then format it in NTFS mode. Once it has formatted it will start to install windows.
