Welcome to the forum bobd

Run msconfig: follow this guide

Strip out anything that you don't think should be running on start up. List 'em here if you're not sure what they are and we will help...

mcmnhdlr
mcvsshld
mcagent
incd
systray
fmctrl
fdisp5a
lvcoms
wservice
namebat
mhotkey
gcasserv
nwiz
mcupdate
nvcpl
mpftray
ctfmon
wkufind
nerocheck

if I go into task manager there is an entry: svchost - network services which is using 99% of the cpu.
if I end that process my pc runs great. looks like I need to find a way to stop that from starting up.

mcmnhdlr - McAfee
mcvsshld - McAfee
mcagent - McAfee
incd - CD/DVD writing service
Systray - leave this!
FMCtrl - Genius SM-Live Control Panel. Enhances audio output through Genius sound cards
fpdist5a - unknown! (fdisp5a) - Fine Print Software
lvcoms -? associated with the Logitech QuickCam series hardware
namebat - unknown!
mhotkey.exe is used for configuring additional keys on Chicony keyboards. This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling this is down to user preference, however disabling may disbale the special keys.
gcasserv - Giant AntiSpyware/Microsoft AntiSpyware - gcasserv.exe
nwiz - ok
mcupdate - ok
nvcpl - ok
mpftray.exe is a process associated with McAfee Internet Security suite
ctfmon - ok
wkufind.exe is a process relating to Microsoft Picture-It.
nerocheck - Nero burning - ok
wservice - Tablet client Driver for UC-Logic Pen/Graphics Tablet

So...nothing really of issue there. We need to look at other stuff - let me think

Sorry, SVCHost could be used by a virus - I think MSBlaster uses it - run Stinger: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ to zap it...

stinger didnt find anything.

I'm beginning to think it might be easier to start from scratch, format the hd.

I've just found that svchost-network services is a second instance that starts when i first try to do anything after booting up,it takes up all of the cpu, if i end the process its ok after that till next time i boot up, could it be a prob with ie?
