Default [Information/Pending] System shutting down

The past couple of days my PC has been shutting down on it's own. I am running Windows 2000 Pro with several spyware/virus programs. Everything has been fine until recently, it goes into shutdown mode and at the end gives a message that it is now o.k. to turn off my system. I can be on the internet or Excel or no programs at all and it just shuts down. I get the screen that says that is is saving my settings and then tells me windows is shutting down. Very frustrating. Any ideas as to what is causing this and whay I can do?

Hi & welcome.

Even though you are running Anti-Virus software, I would suggest that you download and run this:

McAfee Stinger

..it's a good place to start. Post your findings.

Thanks for your response. I ran Stinger and it found nothing. I failed to mention earlier that might be pertinent , I am writing this and running in safe mode because it seems to be stable. Anything else you can suggest will be greatly received.

How long after you turn on your machine does it shutdown on its own?

Could you check and make sure that your system is not overheating, one of the ways to do this is to open your PC Case, and make sure that the fan on the CPU is spinning, also touch the heatsink and make sure it isn't too hot.

It might also be an issue with drivers, I recall working on a system that I had loaded the wrong drivers on, and when I booted up the machine and logged into windows it came up with the shutdown box and a countdown timer, But that was more or less straight away.
Check your device manager and make sure there aren't any conflicts

Gator914,
I had an issue like this on my machine just the other day. Some applications conflict with each other and the system dependant on the hardware. For example, I use ZoneAlarm firewall and PrevX Home (something that detects Trojans, Virus', etc). On my Compaq running 1.83GHZ and 256 MB RAM they run fine. On the other hand, on my Dell Laptop (3Ghz with 1GB RAM and all sorts of other hardware), ZoneAlarm works fine, but as soon as PrevX loads, I get an error that says NT/System Error has occurred and the system needs to shutdown. 50 seconds later, its down. I rebooted in Safe Mode and all is well. As soon as I uninstalled PrevX, all was well in the neighborhood.

I would suggest uninstalling all the third-party apps you have (SpyBot, etc.) and try and reinstalling them one at a time until the errors start again.
