Windows XP/2000 - [Resolved] windows wont start posted in the Operating Systems forums; old pc has been stored nearly two years, windows tries to start but wont,wont accept dos commands, any clues?...

thanks for the welcome, its an old e-machines, yeah I know, but my good computer crashed. dont know the exact specs but it had been upgraded to "not so slow" intel celeron, windows xp home and when windows tries to open it goes back to dos and flashes checkdisk and acts like its looking for operating system files.

Go into the bios - select the CD Rom as the boot device. Put your XP Cd in the tray and boot. Follow the on-screen menus and try to complete a repair install.

lost the software with ex-wife along with all my money, furniture etc. girlfriend has xp office

I'm sorry but without an operating system disc you can't really go much further with this. It looks like your WinXP installation is corrupt in some way.
