Default [Pending] problem booting

When I try to boot my laptop (toshiba portege 7200 CTe), i get the following:

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Know Good Configuration to rever to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

-Safe Mode
-Safe Mode with Networking
-Safe Mode with Command Prompt

-Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

-Start Windows Normally

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.
However, every one of the options gives me the same message. I also tried booting from the XP Pro cd, which gave the same error. Can anyone help me?

Thanks

(btw, it is running Windows XP Pro).

Hi,

You say you even get this when you boot from the WinXP cd.....strange...

Are you sure that you have enabled the CD rom as the first boot device in the bios ?

When I turn on the computer, it has to startup screen, which says "press F2 to choose boot device", from which I select Boot from CD.

For the moment try selecting "-Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)" in the menu, this will restore (hopefully) the last good copy of your now corrupted registry file.

If this doesn't work, go into Windows in safe mode and use System Restore to "roll-back" to a time prior to your problems.

Like I said in my first post, every option on the screen tries to do it... then just returns the error message.

Boot from the floppy drive with a disk from here: www.bootdisk.com.

This should take you into "dos" - from there you can select the d: drive (XPCD) and then run setup so that you can do a repair install.
