Default [Fixed] - Accessing A Server on Windows XP

Hi! I work in a Library at a school and we have a network there with all the webpage stuff saved on there for the entire school. We used to have MACs in all the classrooms so it was very easy to access the server because all you had to do was go to the chooser and it would already have the server there or you could type in the IP address. This was all very easy until our entire school switched over to Dell PCs with Windows XP. This seemed great because I am so much more familar with Windows and the excellent Web Page designing programs that our available for this OS, but I do not know how to access the server to get my whole web folder that has our Library Web Page documents on it. Also do I need to know the IP address of the server to do this and where do I find that at? Any help would be greatly appreciated as our District Tech Coordinator is an ******* and never seems to want to help a student that might possible be smarter than him...hehe

Thanks

I am also posting this in the Windows XP forum because I am not sure whether it falls under the Networking Hardware section or the XP section. Thanks A Lot!

Adam

I have deleted the duplicate post in Networking Hardware - it is fine here in the XP section

If you can get onto the server then the easiest way to find out the ip is to go to a command prompt > ie: Start > Run > cmd > enter.

Then when you have the "dos" box up, type ipconfig /all

That will give you all the info you need to make a connection to the server in terms of address etc.

It might be a whole lot easier for you to do it from the Dell XP pc tho'. If you have admin rights on a PC, why not map a drive to your folder on the server? Just right click on "My Network Places" and select "Map Network Drive" - if you know the name of the server and you have a suitable user account then the rest will be easy...

So basically all I need to do is type in the name of the server with the // marks and it will find it automatically with no IP address? That would be wonderful. Now once I do that will it ask me for the password that I had to log into with the Macs under chooser? Thanks for your help! I appreciate it so much more... And hopefully when I try this tomorrow I will be able to throw it in the tech directors face! lol Thanks

No - I didn't say that you could just type in the server name :!:

Browse for the server on the XP PC under "My Network Places" (it is a graphical browsing system) and map a network drive - BUT you will need a valid account with admin rights to make the connection. I obviously cannot say whather your old p/w will be any good as it may have changed etc...

I understood what you said, but my question wasn't asking that but thats alright because from what you said in your first post I got it to work! Thanks you soooo sooo much! To make things even better I was able to work on our web page as the tech director walked in and he saw that I had finally gotten the problem that he had said I wouldn't be able to fix without him. Obviously he does not know about the great PCHELPFORUM.COM to help him with his own problems. Personally he might be too much of a "man" to ask for help. But hey I have know problems with that!

ONE last question for now. For some reason I am not able to create a new folder and rename it. I can create one and keep it as the name New Folder but when I go to rename it it comes up with an error 'Cannot rename <xxx>: a file with the name you specified already exists. Specify a different filename." Now this only happens under the explored under the mapped network and this is not happening under My hard drive or anything. It is not a huge problem yet because I can just go to the MAC and pull up the server and add a new folder with the right name it is just very strange that it does not work? Any suggestions would help greatly! Thanks So Much!

...the great PC Help Forum!...I like the sound of that! Thanks.

As you are probably aware, there are a couple of ways of renaming a folder - try them both.

1) left click on the folder name and then click again shortly afterwards - but not too quick - you don't want to "double-click" it.

and

2) Left click on the folder and go to File > rename

I would be interested if neither if those work....hmmmm....

Oh and BTW, your Tech Director needs to give you a raise...for your skills at tracking down the solution and applying it !
